The nutritional potential of human milk is universally known, but its biological potential is not. Research in recent years has revealed the presence of many cellular and humoral factors in human milk that interact with each other and with external factors in complex ways, playing an important role in the development of the immune system, acquisition of tolerance and protection from infectious and immune-mediated diseases.
