SELF-MANAGEMENT OF ASTHMA

Key words: Asthma, Self-management, Parents education, Compliance, Guidelines

The Authors describe the conceptual basis and the contents of an educational project aimed at improving the quality of self-management of asthma. Good compliance to guidelines can be obtained when the relationship between the practicioner and the family is based on mutual confidence and effective communication and when information to families is based on clear and written guidelines. The family should also feel free to call the family doctor for further advice when necessary. The educationinformation- communication strategy developed by the Authors for their asthmatic patients and their families was based on these general criteria and included a flowchart to be used by families. The flow-chart includes criteria for the assessment of the severity of bronchocostriction, based on Peak Expiratory Flow, indications for treatment with nebulized salbutamol and oral steroids, and indications for calling the doctor or referring the child to hospital.
