Weaning, namely the transition from an exclusively milk-based nutrition to a diet that includes other liquids and solids, is a period of transition that is often crucial for the manifestation or the development of food-related diseases. The article describes the manifestations and the treatment of some of the most frequent diseases that can be diagnosed during weaning, such as vitamin deficiencies, hereditary fructose intolerance or food protein- induced enterocolitis. Moreover, the article discusses the possible correlations between the timing and the modalities of weaning and the onset of obesity and immunemediated diseases, such as allergy, celiac disease and type 1 diabetes mellitus.
