Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is one of the main causes of poisoning and death due to intoxication in nowadays society because of the characteristics of this gas, which make it unidentifiable in the environment, and of the many possible sources of production (heating systems, motor vehicles and fires). It is important to recognise the symptoms associated with exposure to CO to be able to take action in the shortest time possible and effectively, thus avoiding complications not only in the short but also in the long term. The present article reports the recommendations for a prompt diagnosis and a correct management of carbon monoxide poisoning, paying particular attention to possible long-term sequelae.
