TRANSCUTANEOUS BILIRUBIN MEASUREMENT IN A PAEDIATRIC AMBULATORY: WHY NOT?

Key words: Transcutaneous bilirubin, Paediatric ambulatory

Many family Paediatricians are engaged in projects on the early discharge of apparently healthy neonates and they must frequently estimate the bilirubin level in the newborns with jaundice. But the estimation of the bilirubin level by visual inspection of the skin is not reliable. The transcutaneous bilirubin measurement through the new devices is a non invasive, painless and reliable method to determine the bilirubin level and its increment in the first days after birth. The new transcutaneous bilirubin devices are different for costs, calibration needs and use possibilities in children of different races. Every paediatrician should evaluate the best device for his work during daily activity.
