Human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with an increased risk of cervical cancer. However, only a few infected women develop cervical carcinoma. Combined cytology and HPV DNA screening are effective preventive interventions. Today, two vaccines are available for primary prevention, even if their long term efficacy and safety need further evidence. The Italian Ministry of Health’s decision to offer the vaccine free of charge to all 12- year-old girls raised a few doubts among physicians and lay people.
