Key words: Environmental tobacco smoke, Children, Prevalence survey
The objective of this study was to estimate Italian children’s exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). 4.602 children of 12-23 months of age were selected by cluster sampling on a regional basis. The main outcome measure was the percentage of exposed children, globally and by type of exposure. Fifty-two percent of children were habitually exposed. A total of 22% of mothers and 38% of fathers smoked, and 18% of children were habitually exposed to non parental ETS. Of the children exposed to ETS, 60% were exposed to a single source, 33% to two and 8% to three or more sources, and 38% of the exposed had at least one parent who smoked at home. Exposure levels are higher than those reported in other countries. It is therefore essential to implement actions to sensitise families to the health consequences of ETS.
