Incorrect positioning and latching can cause sore nipple and may lead to ineffective sucking. Incorrect positioning and latching is one of the main reasons for early interruption and failure of breastfeeding. Correct positioning and latching, as well as attention and recognition of hunger cues, allow the baby to use and develop its inborn reflexes. This will help to achieve an effective suction. It is important that paediatrician know how to help the mother to latch the baby at the breast and how to assess a breastfeed to identify and solve positioning and latching problems.
