OSTIUM SECUNDUM ATRIAL SEPTAL DEFECT: TRANSCATHETER CLOSURE

Key words: Congenital heart disease, Atrial septal defect, Transcatheter closure with Amplatzer device

Transcatheter closure of ostium secundum atrial septal defect with the Amplatzer Septal Occluder was performed in 40 patients (from March 2000 to December 2003) ranging in age from 2 to 67 years (median 23 years). Accurate assessment by transesophageal echocardiography before attempting the transcatheter closure was performed. The stretched diameter of the defects that were closed ranged from 9 to 32 mm (median 17.6 mm) and device sizes ranged from 10 to 34 mm (median 18 mm). The defects were closed with a single device and in one case of the multiple defects are used two devices. At 6 month follow-up 30/31 (96.7%) patients had complete closure of their defects. The only complication encountered was a device embolization in a 16-year-old girl with surgical removal. The Amplatzer Septal Occluder device has demonstrated excellent clinical success in the closure of secundun atrial septal defect.
