PROMOTION OF EARLY DEVELOPMENT: THE BRAZELTON APPROACH

Key words: Early development, Newborn, Touchpoints, Observation, Health promotion

The Neonatal Behavioural Assessment Scale (NBAS) is a standardised tool to assess term newborn babies and young infants, based on the observation of the spontaneous behaviour of the baby and of his/her interaction with the caretaker. The tool is aimed at improving parents’ awareness of their baby’s competencies and ultimately at promoting better interaction. In the “touchpoint” model, the principles of NBAS have been extended to children up to 6 years. The main characteristics of this approach are the empathic role of the health professional, and the interdisciplinary nature of the tool, which allows and promotes the communication between different health professionals and between professionals and parents.
