OCCIPITAL PLAGIOCEPHALY AND ASSOCIATED POSTURAL TORTICOLLIS IN YOUNG BABIES

Key words: Occipital plagiocephaly, Postural torticollis, Sleep position

The Authors present the results of a retrospective study of 181 cases (48 in the 1995-97 period and 133 in the 1998-2000 period) of healthy young babies presenting with occipital plagiocephaly and associated postural torticollis. In agreement with recent international literature, they suggest that the increase is linked to the “back to sleep” advice given to parents since 1997 and the correlated lack of variation in the sleeping position in the first months of life. A brochure designed for pediatricians describes some early signs of predisposition that can be picked up by 3 months of age. Simple suggestions for postural care in at-risk infants are provided.
