It wasn’t a big bubble, it was a double-bubble!
Key words: Down syndrome, Duodenal atresia
Duodenal atresia is an intestinal malformation, which is associated with Down Syndrome in one third of cases. On the contrary, among newborns with Down Syndrome the incidence of duodenal stenosis/atresia is 2.5%. In the majority of cases diagnosis is prenatal, if there is no prenatal diagnosis, vomiting is the earliest manifestation. Abdomen radiography in upright position is the most useful method for the diagnosis after birth; it reveals the characteristic “double-bubble” image, which represents abdominal enlargement before obstruction and lack of air after it. The paper reports the case of a newborn with Down Syndrome and duodenal atresia, which was shown by the distinctive radiological image.
