Recurrent infections in a newborn: are there a sign of a more complex problem?
Key words: Recurrent infection, Perinatal infection, Immunodeficiency syndrome, HIV
An 11-month-old girl was referred to our Paediatric Department for immunological evaluation. She has had history of recurrent infections since birth. During different hospital admissions, blood tests revealed persistent microcytic anemia, liver function test alterations and hypergammaglobulinemia. We found CD4+ T lymphocytes reduction with inversion of CD4+/CD8+ cells ratio. All these elements suggested us the correct diagnosis of HIV infection; however, the causative agent of these pathological manifestations should have been earlier recognized.
