Early child development and developmental paediatrics: What paediatricians know and what they should know

Key words: Early child development, Developmental paediatrics, Primary care paediatricians, Training, Training curriculum

Families are encountering increasing difficulties in receiving information and advice regarding both typical and atypical development of young children. Primary care paediatricians should be able to assess and promote early child development and to support families in adopting best development-related practices and starting, when appropriate, diagnostic and rehabilitation paths. As shown by a recent survey, current knowledge and skills of Italian paediatricians are still inadequate to meet these increasingly emerging needs. Existing European curricula for training of primary care paediatricians in ECD and developmental paediatrics are presented and discussed and the contents of a recently developed training course in ECD are described. Communication skills and ability to liaise with other child professionals and services are key components of the course. Paediatricians should improve their knowledge and skills about developmental determinants and factors that may improve the developmental trajectories of children in order to fully respond to their mission.
