Ten years ago, a study carried out by the Associazione Culturale Pediatri (ACP) among parents of children affected by mental retardation showed widespread dissatisfaction about the quality of public services, frequent use of private services and long “hope journeys” in search of better diagnosis and treatment options. Based on available information, it seems that awareness of the needs of these families within the health care system is today greater and that the situation has improved. However, there are many reports showing that families still experience severe difficulties. A more systematic analysis of these difficulties may provide clues for improved care models.
