LYME DISEASE IN CHILDHOOD: DATA FROM AN ENDEMIC AREA IN SICILY

Key words: Borrelia burgdorferi, Lyme disease

In Italy, Lyme disease is endemic in a few geographical areas (the Carsic highlands in Venezia- Giulia, inner Liguria). The Authors identified a new endemic area in the Messina province (Nebrodi mountains). From 1989 to 2001, 91 cases of Lyme disease have been described, 74 of them in the paediatric age. In 31 cases the clinical features have included the skin only, in 15 the skin and the joints, in 38 the joints only; in 7 cases neurological signs were the only manifestation. Antibiotics are indicated by the oral or parenteral route, depending on the clinical features. Immunisation has been recently proposed but it is not recommended in the paediatric age.
