Pediatri di famiglia, Roma
70 children aged <6 months, suffering from acute tympanitis, consecutively referred to our practice, were treated in accordance with the Dutch guidelines by limiting the prescription of antibiotics to the most serious cases, or to those characterised by persistent intolerable symptoms, since the very beginning or 24 hours after or 3-5 days after. 68/70 were followed up for several months (2 of them eluded the follow-up). Families were very favourable to a program limiting the use of antibiotics. 24 children were administered antibiotics (6 on the first day, 3 on the second day and 15 after the third day). Between the two groups, there was no difference in terms of results or relapses.
